Llorenç Valverde

CURRICULUM VITAE (Summary)

Llorenç Valverde, born in 1953, received the degree of License in Mathematics from the University de Barcelona in 1976, and his Doctorate in Computer Science from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona) in 1982. From 1989 he is in a Full Professor position at the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of the Balearic Islands (Palma de Mallorca)

From 1976 to 1989 he has been with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona), where he was appointed as a Full Professor in 1988. From 1985 to 1989 he has been part time with the Artificial Intelligence Institute of the Center for Advanced Studies of Blanes, from the National Research Council of Spain.

In fall 1979 he visited the Université des Sciences et Techniques de Lille to pursuit research on Information Theory with Professor Kampé de Fériet. He has been Visiting Scholar at the Computer Science Division of the University of California at Berkeley in 1983 and in 1986, where he has conducted some research on Fuzzy Logic. This topic has been also the main topic in his visit as Institute Observer, from February to April 1992, at the SRI International in Menlo Park, California.

His research interests include approximate reasoning models and techniques for intelligent systems, specially those related to Fuzzy Logic. He is author of more than 25 articles in international journals and chapters of edited books on this topic as well as more than 30 communications to international conferences. Four of those articles appear in the anthology "Readings in Fuzzy Systems for Intelligent Systems" (Dubois et al. (Eds.) Morgan Kaufmann, 1993)

Co-editor (with B. Bouchon-Meunier and R.R. Yager) of the books "Uncertainty in Intelligent Systems" (North-Holland, 1993) and "IPMU'92-Advanced Methods in Artificial Intelligence" (LNCS 682, Springer, 1993).

He has been the project responsible of several projects concerned with approximate reasoning and funded by the Spanish government. One, already finished, from 1988 to 1991, and the most recent, from 1992 to 1994, integrates three research teams, one located in Palma, another in the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona), and the third in Blanes (Spain).

Also he is involved in some multimedia projects. He has been the general advisor and responsible of the team that had realized, at the end of 1992, a CD-ROM showing the use of video, computer animation and sound as a complete information guide.

In 1992 he introduced and managed a complete system that enables the use of code-bar labels to ensure the anonymity of the students in the examinations to access to our University. He has been also involved with some other projects, concerning administration and computer matters.

In 1985 he was awarded with the Barcelona Award for Research in Cognitive Sciences and Logic. He is member of several editorial boards of international journals and member of the technical program committees of a number of international conferences. He is also member of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Association fot Computing Machinery (ACM) as well as the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), among others.

Author of the L'Endoll Foradat. Màquines i humans(Holes in a Plug: Machines and Human Beings) that is a collection of journal writings dealing with social impact of computer technologies. Co-author (with his son Joan Genís, aged 15) of the tale En Joanet de l'ordinador (Computer's Johnny) .

In december 1994 he was elected --for a four years term-- Chairman of the UIB's Departament of Mathematics and Computer Science.
